Quick answer

Underground trams, yes. A separate metro system has not been confirmed. The developers say trams can "transition underground" and that light-rail-capable trams can continue onto railway tracks as tram-trains.^[1] A hands-on preview says TF3 includes underground tram stations from the start.^[2] To build and edit tunnels, switch on Underground Mode (press G on PC).^[3]

Underground Mode: working with tunnels

• Turn on the "Underground Mode" toggle in the left panel while building a street or track, or press G.^[3]
• In this mode you can see tunnels and work with them more easily.^[3]
• While it is on, new streets and tracks do not snap to surface roads or tracks. Switch it off again to connect to the surface.^[3]
• To build a tunnel in the first place, raise or lower the street or track with the M and N keys.^[4]

Trams underground and on rail (tram-trains)

The infrastructure dev blog says some trams can run on tram-only infrastructure, "transition underground, and operate directly on railway tracks all in one". To use this, connect tram tracks to rail tracks and assign light-rail-capable trams, which the blog calls "Tram-Trains".^[1] Not every tram can do this.

CGMagazine's February 2026 preview adds that TF2 needed mods for underground tram stations, while TF3 "includes them from the outset, allowing players to build sheltered stations at will".^[2] That was a preview build, so the exact station menu may differ in the release.

What about a real metro or subway?

Neither the official manual's station pages nor the developer blogs we checked list a separate metro or subway transport type, or an underground heavy-rail station.^[5][1] For now, the confirmed underground options are tunnels and underground tram operation.
